Aloha! Hawaii -- our jewel in the Pacific. Hawaii consists of eight MAIN islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the "Big Island" of Hawaii. The "Big Island" is getting even bigger. It is estimated that the island of Hawaii grows by more than 40 acres every year because of the Kilauea Volcano which has been erupting for nearly 30 years. Though the official nickname is "The Aloha State", Hawaii is also known as "The Islands of Aloha" and "Paradise". And, no wonder. The island is lush and tropical with exotic agricultural products like pineapples and cacao and vanilla and coffee. And, the islanders are well aware of their strengths, having passed laws that prohibit billboards and, in some cases, prohibit buildings being built taller than the palm trees . . . nothing to spoil the spectacular views. And it's not just the amazing varieties of plants and flowers, the beaches of the Hawaiian islands can have gold, red, black or even green sand. The Hawaiian islands have a beautiful and rich history, extending back as far as 124 A.D. Other than the plethora of tourists lucky enough to vacation in this lovely state, the folks that live there are, generally, broken into two catagories: "Hawaiians" are those with native ancestry from the islands; "locals" are those that are born and raised there but have no ancestral connection. Many people are unaware that when Pearl Harbour was attacked in 1941, Hawaii had not yet become a state. Hawaii became our 50th glorious state in 1959. This delightful design, celebrating the LAST official state in the United States, offers an outline of the Islands of Hawaii, filled with their state flower, the stunning, yellow hibiscus.
