Colourized photo from 1906 Original Title: 12,000HP Compound pump, Calumet and Hecla stamp mill Location: Oak 5 St, Calmut Lake, Linden, Michigan Built in the 1880's, this giant compound pump, was a part of a copper processing plant. A stamp mill was used to crush copper ore, and this pump supplied the water to that mill. It had the capacity to deliver 65 million gallons of water a day. They used this pump till about 1930-1940, then it was decommissioned, and they used a different plant to process the ore. Note how safe the place actually is, they used railing of some kind to prevent falls, though no real protection from the machines, nor bars between the posts to keep people from rolling out if they do fall. I thought it was also interesting that each level has a broom as well.
