'Stained Glass Wings' Poster

This is a macro of dragonfly who was taking a little rest in the shade on a very hot day in August. I just love the way the light has struck over his delicate wings, making them shimmer and glow, streaking with hints of colour, looking like stained glass. Dragonflies and damselflies of several types were flitting all about us during our hike along the trail of the bay. Some were the small jittery neon blue bars you can barely see, and others were like this lovely, darting like thrown arrows, and as big as the palm of your hand. I just had to wait for one to get worn out and need a nap, and the help of sharper eyes than mine. It wasn't until long after I had taken the photo, and reviewed it several times that I noticed the poor baby's eye. Ouch. The poor dear, his sight must be even worse than mine. But oh, it makes him no less beautiful. And yes, I also adore the cat's face I see in the design of his back. I tried to figure out his species, but hours of careful research only got me that he might be a type of Darner, perhaps a Fawn. Dragonfly species are VERY similar, and the same type can have lots of colour variation, not even just between males and females. So he (or she) is unique in many ways. © 2010 Marlo Dianne.
