St. Martin's Cathedral Slovakia Magnet

St. Martin's Cathedral is the largest and one of the oldest churches in Bratislava, situated on the western edge of the old town below Bratislava Castle. This Gothic cathedral served as the coronation church for the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830, hosting the crowning of eleven Austro-Hungarian monarchs and eight of their consorts, including Maria Theresa. The cathedral is easily recognised by its 85-metre spire, which is uniquely topped with a gilded replica of the Crown of St. Stephen rather than a traditional cross. This 300-kilogram ornament serves as a permanent reminder of the building's royal significance. Inside, the church features impressive Gothic vaulted ceilings, a treasury of baroque sculptures, and leaden crucifixes that showcase centuries of Central European religious history.
