Sounion Magnet

Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: Aκρωτήριο Σούνιο - Akrotírio Soúnio, Ancient Greek: Άκρον Σούνιον, Latin: Sunium Promonturium) is a steep hill which is the southernmost point of the Attica Peninsula, Greece. The temple of Poseidon was erected in the 5th century B.C. over the ruins of an oldest structure. The Archaic temple was destroyed in the Second Greco-Persian war by Xerxes' troops. After the victorious naval Battle of Salamis, the Athenian Navy decorated the promontory with an entire enemy trireme as a trophy dedicated to Poseidon.
