Snake's eye tote bag

The name 'janome' (snake's eye) is derived from the pattern resembling a snake's eye, but its original form is a 'tsurumaki' (a coil for holding备用 bowstrings) that samurai wore on their left waist, attached to the waist string of their 'ebira' (quiver) after putting on their armor (according to Takasawa's 'Kamon no Jiten'). The 'tsurumaki' is a leather or rattan bow accessory used to wind the bowstring, and when worn by a samurai in armor, it forms a ring around their waist, resembling a snake's eye. Later, due to its resemblance to a snake's eye, it was referred to as the 'janome' crest (according to Ito Kosaku's 'Nihon no Monsho').
