Ships in a Storm on the Dutch Coast Ceramic Tile

This design features a painting by the German artist Andreas Achenbach (1815–1910), who was associated with the Romantic movement and the Düsseldorf School of art. It depicts a group of ships that the captains are struggling to steer in a desolate storm. The waves on the water are fierce and strong. There are some larger sailing ships, and in the foreground is a small rowing boat, which may be a lifeboat or a fishing boat. The stormy scene is taking place off the coast of the Netherlands. There are many seagulls flying through the sky beneath the storm clouds. The original artwork was painted by Andreas Achenbach in 1854.
