Photography by Bob Orsillo According to the canonical Gospels of the Bible, Jesus Christ worked many miracles in the course of his ministry. These miracles may be categorised into four groups as cures, exorcisms, resurrection of the dead and control over nature. In the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus refuses to give a miraculous sign to prove his authority. His miraculous healings, however, fulfil prophecy in Isaiah and identify Jesus as the Messiah. In John, Jesus performs seven miraculous signs that punctuate his ministry, from changing water into wine at the start of his ministry to raising Lazarus from the dead at the end. To many Christians and Muslims, the miracles represent actual historical events. Others, such as liberal Christians, may consider these stories to be figurative. Some scholars contend that empirical methods are unable to determine if a given miracle is historical, considering the issue theological or philosophical, while others present arguments for the historicity of miracles.
