Secret school poster

Greek schools were not permitted during the ottoman occupation (15th to early 19th century) in Greece, so the children went to "secret schools". These were built underground. The man on top is guarding the school's entrance from invaders. The reproduction scene is from the Ayia Paraskevi monastery in the village of Mandra, Etoloakarnania. The figures are made of wax. Technically, the image was made from a series of photos, taken under low light and stitched together.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!
