Scottish Last of the Clan Oil Painting Tea Towel
A kitchen towel for lovers of Scotland and all things Scottish. The 1865 oil painting 'The Last of the Clan' by Thomas Faed depicts the tragedy of the Highland Clearances of the 19th Century, when Scots where evicted from their land by rich landowners to make way for sheep. The background is a burnt orange, yellow, brown and green tartan plaid. Emigration, often forced, to places such as America and Canada, was the only hope of survival. Standing on the shore as the steamer sets sail is a feeble old man on a horse surrounded by the last of his kith and kin. Sadly today, half of Scotland is owned by just over 400 people, few of whom are actually Scots. As Britain's aristocratic families die off or sell up, a new breed of foreign laird is exploiting Scotland's feudal land laws to buy up swathes of the Highlands and islands. Supporters of Scottish independence want a more transparent system of ownership and for Scotland’s land to benefit Scots, including more community ownership.
