Race between the Schooners Dreadnought and Columbia by James Edward Buttersworth, circa 1870 Sail Steam Yacht Emily of the New York Yacht Club The race was a stake race observed by the yacht Emily of the New York Yacht Club. The Columbia made American sailing history when it appeared to be able to defeat the 143-ft Canadian schooner Bluenose in a competition for the fishermen's trophy. The races ended in a dispute when the Bluenose's captain refused to complete the last of three races. Schooner Columbia participated in several races before disappearing off Nova Scotia in 1927.
