Enjoy this beautiful reproduction of the Indian miniature painting "Scenes from the Childhood of Krishna, from a Sur Sagar Manuscript" dated from 1655 AD. The painting comes from a manuscript of the long lyrical poem, the Sur Sagar ("Ocean of Melody"), a sixteenth-century work by the blind poet Sur Das (1478-1581). One of the best-loved examples of Indian literature, the poem relates in colourful detail the childhood and coming-of-age of Krishna, the eighth avatar, or manifestation, of the Hindu saviour deity Vishnu.About miniature painting: The earliest surviving miniature paintings are on palm leaves from the 10th century and on paper from the 14th century. The images accompanied texts in religious manuscripts and illustrations of mythological epics, as well as portraits, court scenes, flora and fauna.
