During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Scallywag was the pejorative term for southern abolitionists and those who believed in the Union cause. Southerners who did not believe in slavery, white supremacy, and the other values of the Confederacy were labelled Scalawags.
Growing up in the south, kids were taught that a scallywag was a terrible thing to be.
It's time southerners took back the term and used it as a source of pride.
Any profits from sales of this shirt will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Centre.
