When threatened, these shy, non-aggressive creatures curl into a ball, completely covering their head and underbelly, and exposing their head-to-tail scales. Unfortunately, this makes them easy prey for poachers who just scoop them up. In 2020, the Chinese government upgraded protection for these amazing nocturnal mammals to the highest level, and banned the use of their scales in traditional eastern medicine.
