California and the Pacific Northwest are burning almost year-round. The cause is an extended drought and exceedingly high temperatures, combined with high winds that can mix to form fire tornadoes or firenadoes. Historic weather patterns supported lush green growth and tall tree forests on the West Coast. These are now threatened as dried vegetation supports extensive wildfires that spread rapidly. Thousands of firefighters are engaged on an almost continuous basis to control these blazes. The fires not only destroy forests and homes, they damage power lines, causing blackouts. Clearly, the effects of global warming and climate change have come to the United States in a massive way. We must face this new reality and reverse the increasing global temperatures as well as increasing the resilience of the California environment against rampaging fire.
