The "Sator Square" of five words (of debatable origin and translation) is a magical formula associated with early Christianity. The earliest dateable example was found in the ruins of Pompeii. It has been used for many purposes including putting out fires, removing jinxes and fevers, protecting cattle from witchcraft, using against adversaries, overcoming pride of spirits, and protecting against fatigue while travelling. It has been found in churches and abbeys among other places. Because it is a palindrome, it is viewed as immune to tampering by the devil, who becomes confused by the repetition of the letters.
