Fine art greeting card inspired by a charming and intimate madonna and child painting by Sienese painter Sano di Pietro, dateable to circa 1450-1455. This representation of Mary and the Jesus child is of the Glykophilousa (Loving kindness) type in the tradition of Byzantine icons. The child caresses her cheek while the madonna appears sad, seemingly contemplating his coming suffering. Perhaps a comforting picture for example when dealing with child loss. The tenderness of the picture and also the symbolism: with one hand the Jesus child is reaching for cherries, a symbol of Passion (suffering), but in the other hand he holds an apple, the fruit of Salvation.
