Saint Sophia Cathedral Belarus Postcard

Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk stands as one of the most historically significant architectural monuments in Belarus. Originally constructed in the 11th century by Prince Vseslav the Sorcerer, it was built to mirror the grand Sophia cathedrals of Kyiv and Constantinople, symbolising the power and independence of the Polotsk Principality. Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent dramatic transformations, particularly after a devastating explosion in the early 18th century. It was subsequently rebuilt in the mid-1700s by architect Jan Krzysztof Glaubitz in the distinctive Vilnius Baroque style, giving it the elegant, soaring white facade seen today.
