Saint Gregory with Saints Poster

Peter Paul Rubens painted Saint Gregory with Saints (also known as Pope Saint Gregory, Surrounded by Saints, Venerating the Miraculous Image of the Madonna and Child), an oil on canvas work created between 1606 and 1607. This Baroque painting depicts Pope Saint Gregory the Great at the centre, dressed in a cope, surrounded by saints Papias, Maurus, Domitilla, Nereus, and Achilleus—whose relics are housed under the high altar of the Chiesa Nuova in Rome, where the painting was originally commissioned for the Oratorians. The painting emphasizes religious devotion and veneration of the Madonna and Child, with a strong spiritual and ceremonial atmosphere. After a brief period in the Chiesa Nuova, Rubens brought the painting to Antwerp for his mother’s funerary chapel. It was later looted during the French Revolutionary Wars and eventually became part of the Musée de Grenoble’s collection in France, where it remains today. The work is noteable for its rich colour, dynamic composition, and the inclusion of multiple saints, reflecting Rubens’ mastery of religious narrative and Baroque grandeur.
