Route 66 Motel California

Route 66 and a real estate bargain rolled into one with this are of town for sale - a vintage motel and retro neon sign along a stretch of historic American highway through California desert. You are looking at a piece of history which may seem familiar since there have been glimpses of this place in some movies. The art deco sign, considered an icon of vintage travel, was a modern addition about a half century ago (1959) to the gas station which opened in the late 1930s. The Mojave Desert town of Amboy was for sale (again) in the early 2000's when this photo was taken. The buildings are currently being preserved as a sort of ghost-town museum. The deserted motel rooms are reminiscent of something Norman Bates might own, but when Route 66 was in its heydey, a couple hundred people actually lived in Amboy. (Thus the deserted school house.) Roy's gas station was always known for having some of the highest-priced gasoline, but if you were about to be stranded, you did not care at that moment.. The gas station has reportedly been reopened in 2008.
