Repro Lewis Carrol De Morgan Red Jabberwacky Tile
This is the same as one of the tiles Charles Dodson (better known as Lewis Carrol, the creator of Alice in Wonderland) used on one of the two fireplace surrounds that Dodson chose De Morgan tiles to decorate in the early 1880s. The original has an irridescent red lustre glaze that was not possible to capture here, but we think this one does justice to De Morgan's original in every other way.
De Morgan (1839-1917) was an important Arts & Crafts movement artist and was the head of tile production at William Morris's studio. His work was influenced by Persian and Islamic art and featured stylized flora and fauna from both life and fantasy.
