Longyearbyen, the main settlement of Svalbard, is the world’s northernmost town with a permanent population, located at 78° north latitude—just about 1,300 kilometres from the North Pole. Originally founded as a coal mining town in 1906, Longyearbyen has transformed into a unique Arctic community that serves as the cultural, logistical, and tourism hub of the archipelago. Despite its extreme location, the town is surprisingly vibrant, with colourful buildings standing out against the stark Arctic landscape of mountains, tundra, and glaciers. Visitors can explore cosy cafés, restaurants, and shops, as well as important cultural institutions like the Svalbard Museum, which offers fascinating insights into polar history, Arctic wildlife, and the lives of early explorers and trappers. Life in Longyearbyen is shaped by the environment: during the midnight sun season (April to August), the sun never sets, while from late October to mid-February, the town plunges into polar night, offering extraordinary opportunities to see the northern lights. The surrounding wilderness is both beautiful and challenging, with polar bears occasionally roaming near town—so carrying a rifle for protection outside of the settlement is common practice.
