As a result of their persecution and often times death, first century Christians developed a secret "symbol language" so to identify one another. The fish, possibly drawn from the Gospel story of the loaves and the fish, is one such symbol. That which looks like the letter X in English actually represents the Greek letter pronounced Chi - similar to Christ. In this design the contempory rainbow symbol has been added to the fish so to identify one's self as a gay or a lesbian Christian.
