Protestant Church, Debrecen, Hungary The Protestant Church of Debrecen is also called the "Great Church" Nagytemplom). Three churches were erected on the same place, but all of them were destroyed by fire. The construction of the current building began in 1803. The new church was designed by Mihály Péchy, but his project was modified several times. The church has been in use since 1819 but it was completed in 1823. This is the largest Protestant church in Hungary. The main nave is 55 m (180 feet) long, 15 m (50 feet) wide and 21 m (68 feet) high. It has the capacity to accommodate 5000 people (but seats 3000). The 61 m (200 feet) high towers are excellent viewpoints. They are the tallest structures of the city. The city centre is just down. There is nothing else just the city and Great Plains. The nearest slopes of the Carpathians are located 90 km away.
