In 1930, Oil was discovered in the East Texas area surrounding Kilgore, TX. Just as the Great Depression had all but killed the local economy, the oil discovery set off a boom that began a new era of prosperity and huge growth in the area. Kilgore grew from a town of under 800, to a city of 10,000 almost overnight. This photo was taken right at the beginning of that oil boom in about 1931. I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!
