Poster/Print: Mucha - Sarah Bernhardt - Gismonda Poster

This image is a quality art reproduction of Alphonse Mucha's Art Nouveau poster "Gismonda," created in 1984 to advertise Sarah Bernhardt's role of "Gismonda" at Paris' Theatre de la Renaissance. This poster broke new ground in the art poster world, and within a week of printing, Mucha became the most celebrated artist in Paris. Sarah Bernhardt loved the poster, and signed Mcha to a six year contract. During that time, Mucha designed eight more posters for her. ~ "Gismonda" was the first, and since it departed so radically from the posters of the time, it is often viewed as the most important. Note: Mucha became one of the most sought out artists of the Art Nouveau, but interestingly, he protested the "Art Nouveau" label, for it was his view that art is eternal and not "new." He strongly preferred his paintings to his posters, but the world has always sought out his posters. His paintings say volumes about the spirit of people and are very important, but for the most part, they are yet to be discovered by the world.
