Highland Park in Rochester NY is one of the oldest municipal parks in the US. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1888, the park encompasses 150 acres and boasts over 1200 lilac shrubs and includes 500 varieties. In addition, the park offers a Japanese Maple collection, 35 varieties of sweet-smelling magnolias, a barberry collection, a rock garden with dwarf evergreens, 700 varieties of rhododendron, azaleas, mountain laurel and andromeda, horse chestnuts, spring bulbs and wildflowers, a large number of trees, and the park’s pansy bed features 10,000 plants. The Park influenced the city's moniker as "The Flower City," and is honoured every year with the Rochester Lilac Festival. The Goodman Street entrance into the park has a series of well-maintained concrete staircases (68 steps in all) leading to a scenic view of the city's water reservoir.
