Portuguese Holiday Memento Stone Coaster

This image recreates the wall tiles in the famous bakery - Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém. The natural stone patina of the coaster adds to its charm. According to local history, the Jeronimos monks in the parish of Santa Maria de Belém near Lisbon created Portuguese tarts (Pastel de nata) to deal with an excess of egg yolks as egg whites were required for starching their robes. In 1834 when their monastery closed, the nearby sugar mill purchased the secret recipe and opened the Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém.
