Portland Grand Trunk Depot BW Poster

Portland Grand Trunk Depot BW Poster

Portland Maine's Grand Trunk Railway Depot, probably circa 1904 after the clock was installed. The pink granite depot was opened at the corner of India and Fore Streets on November 4, 1903, becoming the third station here since the Atlantic & St Lawrence Railroad first built one in 1847. The clock tower was torn down in 1948 for safety reasons, and the station itself was demolished by the Canadian National March 29-31, 1966, to reduce the railroad's tax burden. Regular passenger service ended in 1960, after which summer only trains were run, subsequently reduced to the weekends, which were finally abandoned in 1967. Behind the station looms Elevator #1 to the right of the tower, built in 1898 and demolished in 1943. Elevator #2 to the left was built in 1902 and demolished in 1974 after a fire in 1970 destroyed the remaining wharf; the timbers were used to build the new Samoset Hotel in Rockport. To the right, on the corner with Commercial Street, is the Grand Trunk Railway and Ocean Steamer office building which stands to this day, enlarged to three stories by the 1920s.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
