Pompeii Garden Fresco Card

Pompeii, the lost city, unearthed after centuries under volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. This fresco was discovered in the House of the Gold Bracelet, and is a portion of a larger fresco that covered an entire back wall of the home. These paintings of lush vegetation created the illusion of a large garden, often where there was none, or only a small amount of green space. This portion of the fresco shows a beautiful white dove perched on red branches highlighted with green leaves. In this photograph, the age and condition of this fresco is clearly evident. One can see the cracking and discoloration of the fresco after almost two thousand years buried under the volcanic ash, only to emerge a beautiful piece of art and history.
