The "magic" of hydrangeas is the ability of the grower to affect the colour of the flowers. Pink flowers occur in soil with higher pH and no aluminium; blue flowers occur in soil with lower pH and the presence of aluminium; white hydrangeas cannot be "chemically" changed to another colour, but will sometimes take on a hue with advanced maturity. These gorgeous blooms are associated with the 4th wedding anniversary and, in Asia, they are said to mean "You are the beat of my heart". There are many tales regarding hydrangeas; some folklore indicates they can be used to break curses or hexes. There is also a zodiac reference. Hydrangeas are Libra's flower, capturing the thoughtful and gentle disposition associated with that sign. When you want to tell someone, "Thank you for understanding", send hydrangeas. As far as the floriography is concerned, hydrangeas symbolise friendship, devotion, understanding, love, gratitude, enlightenment, delicate beauty, grace, acceptance and peace. That may be one of the reasons that hydrangeas have always maintained some level of popularity in bridal bouquets. This amazing hydrangea is one of the darkest pinks I've ever seen, going well beyond the soft, baby pink usually displayed. The clusters of tiny flowers, or poms, rather resemble a gathering of butterflies, poised for flight.
