Plain of Jars Laos Postcard

The Plain of Jars is a mesmerising megalithic archaeological landscape scattered across the Xiangkhoang Plateau in northeastern Laos. This unique UNESCO World Heritage site features thousands of large, hollowed-out stone jars ranging from one to three metres in height, carved out of sedimentary rock, granite, greenstone, and limestone. Believed by archaeologists to date back to the Iron Age between 500 BC and 500 AD, these ancient structures are thought to have been used for burial practices, though local legends beautifully suggest they were forged by giants to brew rice wine to celebrate a great military victory. Set against rolling hills, open grasslands, and occasional patches of pine forest, the landscape provides a dramatic background for these mysterious relics. The surrounding area also bears the heavy scars of modern history, heavily impacted by intense aerial bombardment during the Secret War of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, safe pathways cleared of unexploded ordnance allow visitors to marvel at the sheer scale of the jars while soaking in the quiet, reflective, and deeply historic atmosphere of the Laotian countryside.
