Place de la Bourse is one of Bordeaux's most recognisable landmarks, standing as a masterpiece of 18th-century French architecture. Designed by the royal architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, the symmetrical horseshoe-shaped facades represent the transition from mediaeval walls to a modern, open city. It serves as a majestic backdrop to the Garonne riverfront, epitomising the elegance of the Enlightenment era. Directly in front of the square lies the Miroir d'eau, or Water Mirror, the world's largest reflecting pool. This shallow granite surface creates a mesmerising visual effect, alternating between a thin film of water that perfectly mirrors the Palais de la Bourse and a playful mist. At sunset, the golden limestone of the buildings glows against the deep blue of the sky, creating a serene and sophisticated atmosphere that draws locals and travelers alike.
