Pierre-Auguste Renoir - The Skiff Rectangular Sticker

The Skiff (La Yole), 1875 - Pierre-Auguste Renoir, oil on canvas. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841 - Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919) was a French Impressionist painter. This sunlit scene on the Seine is typical of Impressionist imagery: two fashionably dressed women in a skiff, a sailboat, a riverside villa and a steam train crossing a railway bridge. We are probably looking at the river near Chatou, about ten miles west of central Paris and a popular spot for boating, although the exact site has never been identified. Often dated to 1879-80, the picture was probably painted in 1875, the year of Luncheon at the Restaurant Fournaise, with which it shares soft, feathery brushstrokes. Renoir conveys the heat and light of summer with bright, unmixed paint straight from the tube and no black or earth tones.
