Phoenix Tree & Rabbits Antique Chinese Painting Card

Phoenix Tree & Rabbits Antique Chinese Painting Card

This masterpiece, commissioned by the Qing Dynasty court under Emperor Kangxi, is a quintessential example of Chinese court painting from the early 18th century . Painted on silk with meticulous ink and colour, the scroll measures 176.2 cm in height and 95 cm in width, showcasing Leng Mei’s mastery of gongbi (meticulous brushwork) combined with subtle Western influences, such as the use of chiaroscuro to render the rabbits’ fur and eyes with lifelike volume . The composition centres on two plump white rabbits—a symbol of prosperity and fertility in Chinese culture—grazing beneath a towering phoenix tree (Firmiana simplex), whose broad leaves and peeling bark are rendered with botanical precision . The rabbits, with their fluffy fur and expressive red eyes, evoke a sense of serene domesticity, while the surrounding landscape features autumn chrysanthemums and osmanthus blossoms, symbolising longevity and imperial favour . Leng Mei, a court painter renowned for his ability to blend traditional Chinese aesthetics with European techniques introduced by Jesuit missionaries, executed this work for the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time when rabbits were associated with the moon goddess Chang’e . The painting’s symmetrical layout, rich colours, and symbolic motifs reflect the opulence of Qing Dynasty court art, making it a visual metaphor for harmony between nature and imperial power. [Texture Note]This Qing Dynasty silk scroll retains the natural weave patterns of its original silk substrate, visible as delicate horizontal and vertical lines in the background. These organic textures, unique to handwoven silk, add depth to the composition while serving as a testament to the painting’s historical authenticity. The transparency of mineral pigments applied during the gongbi process further reveals the silk’s inherent grain, creating a tactile visual experience that bridges the gap between art and craftsmanship.

A beautiful card. Highest quality materials and print. Misunderstood the explanation of the gold accent. I took it as the design would be metallic in its appearance. Still a lovely card and I am extremely happy with it overall. Perfect, only that I expected the gold to be metallic.
