Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferi) Your attention is drawn to this magnificent, imperious raptor, designated as the National Bird of the Republic of the Philippines. The largest Eagle in the world is found nowhere else. If given the chance, they can live between 30 - 60 years. Mated pairs hunt as a team. One will distract the prey, holding their cautious attention. Meanwhile, the other bird swoops in from behind, and the hunt is another success. From the heights of the tropical forest canopy, these birds rely on the forked boughs of tall trees for the nesting site. Often, they'll take advantage of the luxurious fronds of huge epiphytic ferns or dense patches of orchids that grow on the trees, using them as an additional platform. From these botanical expansions, a foundation of sticks takes on immense proportions. When all is done to satisfaction. a single egg, white and absent of any markings, will remain secure here. It will be 55, 58, 60 days before the eggshell is broken, and the newly hatched fledgling appears. This offspring will stay in the surrounding confines of the nest for 4 to 5 months. Both parents attend to all needs, and more than a year will pass, up to 17 months before this family unit changes. At last, upon reaching the age of certainty where the young bird is more than capable, its wings extend for flight. Alone for now, the Eagle will find its way in life.
