The drug store changed little since they first started. They both have medicines that are yucky and hard to swallow. However back in those days, things weren't regulated like they are today. Since no one was looking over their shoulders, they could technically put anything they wanted in their "cure". See all those bottles in the background? Each thing in there could blind you, make it worse, or go great with tea. The cures might have done something, but probably not so much.
