Penpont World War 1 Memorial Card

This evocative card features a black and white photograph of a World War 1 memorial of a soldier standing on a stone plinth silhouetted against a cloudy grey sky. His head under the round metal cap is gently bowed and his gun reversed as he remembers his fallen comrades. The emotive bronze sculpture is located at the east end of the little village of Penpont in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, UK. Cast in bronze in 1920 by Glasgow sculptor William Kellock Brown (1856-1934), 41 names of the war dead are listed from WW1 and 9 from WW2. I’ve titled the photograph Lest We Forget, a phrase which came into common usage in the aftermath of World War 1 and is still used today in Remembrance Day ceremonies and on war memorials. The phrase, a reminder not to forget the sacrifice of lives lost in war, originated in ‘Recessional,’ a poem by Rudyard Kipling.
