The inside of the card contains the following description:
“The picture is of a 1 Bamboos suit tile taken from a Mah-Jong set made from bone and bamboo (dovetailed together) and measuring just 1.8cm x 2.5cm (0.7” x 1”). It was probably made in China between 1920 and 1940.
The Bamboos suit has tiles numbered from 1 to 9. 1 Bamboos and 9 Bamboos are 'major' tiles, scoring more than the other 'minor' suit tiles.
The 1 Bamboos tile invariably shows a picture of a bird. This one shows a peacock, emblem of beauty and dignity. Only the best carvers and designers were given the job of creating designs like this.”
