Five Bathers (Cinq baigneurs), painted between 1900 and 1904 in oil on canvas by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. Five male bathers occupy a compact landscape beside the water, their bodies arranged as a rhythmic group rather than as individual portraits. Cézanne builds the figures with firm contours and patches of color that echo the trees and banks around them, reducing the distinction between body and landscape. Painted during the final years of his life on a small canvas measuring only 42 by 55 centimetres, the work belongs to a subject that had occupied him for decades, as his late bather compositions became increasingly synthetic and monumental. Here, the repeated poses and compressed space turn an outdoor scene into a carefully balanced study of form and of the relationship between figure and landscape.
