Qala'at ibn Maan, Palmyra, Syria Palmyra was captured by the Muslim Arabs in 634. Until the fall of the Umayyad caliphate the city flourished, but later the people started abandoning the city. The emirs of Damascus converted the temple of Ba'al converted into a fortress. Tamerlan conquered and sacked the city, but it recovered quickly. Fakhr ad-Din al-Maan, a Lebanese prince who tried to control the Syrian desert built a castle on the top of the mountain dominating the oasis. The castle had a moat and was only accessible through a drawbridge.
