In 1530, the Blessed Mother appeared in Mexico to Juan Diego requesting him to ask the bishop to build a church in her honour for peace. The angels painted a portrait of her sweet expression on Diego's tilma (cape) to persuade the bishop to believe that the request was truly from the Mother of God. To this day, the miraculous tilma remains at the most visited shrine in the Americas.
