Photo from rainforest of Borneo, mother orangutan with baby. The adult female is Gara, holding a mango in one hand as her one-week-old daughter, Geri, clings to her side in typical orangutan fashion. It is the baby's duty to hang on! Mother Gara is a success story of Orangutan Foundation International. In the 1970's, pioneering primatologist, Dr. Birute Galdikas, rescued Gara from a dismal life as an illegal pet, later releasing her into the areas of rain forest patrolled and protected through the efforts of OFI.
