A male actor portraying, Tegoshi Tsukuna, the role of a woman. In 1600 Kabuki began as female performers in both male and female roles. Female Kabuki was banned thirty years later. After that the male performers playing the female role were called Onnagata. From an original 19th century (1844) woodcut, 'Tegoshi no Sukuna' (Actor in role of Tegoshi Tsukuna), by Utagawa Toyokuni.
