Mot Måsøy, is sør mot Porsanger, og i have to grensar i sørvest søraust mot Lebesby kommune. Størsteparten av kommunen ligg på Magerøya, men have to omfattar også to delar av fastlandet på aust og vestsida av Porsangerfjorden. Kommunen heitte til Kjelvik kommune fram 1950.
