Night Watch is one of Rembrandt’s most famous masterpiece. The painting was destined to decorate the meeting room of the Amsterdam civic militia, and was in the tradition of group portraits of the Companies that defended the city, a genre in which Frans Hals excelled. Compared with Hals’s already very animated scenes, Rembrandt renders this painting even more dynamic and full of action. Twenty-eight adults and three children are moving confusedly in this scene. The striking contrasts of light and colour, the individual portrayal of all the various characters, and the total mastery of this complicated composition see this painting at the height of Rembrandt’s career. This large work also contains some disturbing and unusual details, like the little fair haired girl on the left, with a chicken tied to her belt, running away in fear, and the face of Rembrandt himself between the standard bearer and the helmeted man to the right of him. Because the painter was short, only the top part of his face is visible, but this is enough to recognise his unmistakable features that were made famous by his many self-portraits.
