Nathalie at the old Beech Tree

This is a watercolor painting featuring my daughter, a friendly squirrel and a magnificent old European Purple Beech Tree that lives in front of the Terry Shane Teaching Garden in the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College. The Beech Tree was planted in 1881 as the Swarthmore College Class Tree. The large branch arching over the scene was a sad casualty of the snow storms during the winter of 2011. However, using some photographs taken in previous years, I was able to bring it back to life on paper. This painting is the first of a series that I’ve planned featuring my daughter playing in various locations throughout the Arboretum.
