The Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is often called the "Unicorn of the Sea" because of its distinctive tusk; actually a greatly extended canine tooth. During the Mediaeval age some Europeans believes that Narwhal tusks, harvested by the Greenland Norse were in fact Unicorn horns. They were worth more then their weight in gold. The Narwhal is particularly vulnerable to climate change , perhaps even more so than is the Polar Bear, due to a narrow geographical range and specialised diet. We can all help ensure that these beautiful animals continue to live by reducing our carbon footprint.
