Narsaq Greenland Travel Postcard

​Narsaq, meaning "plain" in Greenlandic, is a picturesque town located on a coastal plain in southern Greenland's Kujalleq municipality. As of 2020, it had a population of approximately 1,346 residents. The town is uniquely positioned between the Tunulliarfik Fjord and the imposing mountain of Qaqqarsuaq, offering stunning vistas of icebergs and lush green landscapes during the summer months. This verdant environment supports a thriving sheep farming industry, with over half of Greenland's sheep farms situated in the Narsaq area. The local economy also benefits from fishing and a growing tourism sector, attracting visitors interested in hiking, exploring Norse ruins, and experiencing the rich natural beauty of the region. ​ Historically, Narsaq has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of Norse settlements, including the nearby ruins of Dyrnæs church and the Landnám homestead, dating back to around the year 1000. The modern town was established in 1830 as a trading post named Nordprøven and experienced significant growth after the establishment of a fishing factory in 1953. In recent years, Narsaq has been at the centre of debates concerning mining activities, particularly regarding the Kvanefjeld plateau, which holds one of the world's largest deposits of rare earth elements and uranium. Local residents have expressed concerns about environmental impacts, leading to political and legal discussions on the future of mining in the area
