Napoleon's Bivouac on the Night Before Wagram Poster
Adolphe Roehn - Bivouac of Napoleon on the Night Before the Battle of Wagram
The Battle of Wagram, fought on July 5–6, 1809, was one of the largest and most significant engagements of the Napoleonic Wars. It took place between the French Empire, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Austrian Empire, commanded by Archduke Charles. Following a series of conflicts in the War of the Fifth Coalition, the Battle of Wagram was fought near the town of Wagram in modern-day Austria. Napoleon aimed to secure his position and strengthen French dominance in Central Europe, while the Austrians sought to regain territory lost in previous campaigns.
The battle was chraacterised by its massive scale, involving hundreds of thousands of troops on both sides. Napoleon employed innovative tactics, including the use of a grand battery to concentrate artillery fire, and his forces executed a well-coordinated attack on the Austrian lines. The battle raged for two days, and the fighting was intense and brutal. Ultimately, the French emerged victorious, and the Austrians were forced to retreat. The Battle of Wagram resulted in a significant loss of life, with estimates of casualties reaching over 80,000, making it one of the bloodiest battles of the Napoleonic era.
The aftermath of Wagram led to the Treaty of Schönbrunn, signed in October 1809, which solidified French dominance in Europe and forced Austria to make territorial concessions. Despite the victory at Wagram, the battle also highlighted the growing challenges and strains on the French Empire. The heavy losses suffered by both sides demonstrated the human cost of Napoleon's ambitious military campaigns and foreshadowed the difficulties that would contribute to his ultimate downfall in the coming years.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
